| Academics | Located at Capital Normal University (CNU), this program focuses on Chinese language and cultural studies. The program's curriculum and activities capitalize on Beijing's rich learning environment, and courses encourage students to learn both in and out of the classroom. Scholarships: CET offers several scholarships for students participating in their programs. See www.cetacademicprograms.com for more information. |
| Courses | Courses available include several levels of Chinese language (intermediate to advanced) and area studies courses taught in English. The area studies courses will include excursions to sites around Beijing. Knowledge gained throught these visits will be incorporated into classroom discussions. Typically 3 units are in Chinese language, 1 for the ICRP, 1 for Twenty-First Century Beijing and 1 unit can be chosen from other area studies courses offered. ). During the second semester, students who are in the extended-term program enroll in three additional selected courses. |
| Credits | Students must enroll in the equivalent of 6 K-Units of credit. Students may not under load or overload. To receive Kalamazoo credit, courses must be within the liberal arts tradition. In order to be counted as one K-Unit of credit, a course must have 40-45 contact hours. In cases where students must combine courses to achieve the minimum number of contact hours for a unit of credit, both courses must be from the same discipline, e.g. history with history or art with art. All course work is recorded on the transcript with the letter grade as converted to the Kalamazoo College grading system. Study abroad grades are not computed into the Kalamazoo GPA. All courses must be passed with a grade of "C" of higher to be counted for credit. All course work, including the integrative cultural research project, must be completed and turned in before the end of the academic program or no credit will be given. Attendance at all classes is mandatory. |
| ICRP/Field Study | The Integrative Cultural Research Project can be either a research project or an unpaid internship that explores global issues and the local circumstances, approaches and solutions while enhancing students' local language skills. Internship placements are typically with relief organizations, international agencies, women's groups, small businesses or Non-Governmental Organizations. The program staff assists students with project design, internship placement or both. All ICRPs are conducted in the Beijing area. The research or internship will result in a major paper (10-15 pages). The paper is due and must be turned in to the instructor before the end of the academic program or no credit will be awarded. |
| Housing | Students live in a brand-new state-of-the-art foreign student dormitory and eat in the University cafeteria as well as area restaurants. All student rooms come equipped with networked computers. The dormitory also houses classrooms, faculty offices, a computer center, library, and a swimming pool. CET administers the only program in Beijing that offers students the opportunity to live with Chinese roommates from local universities. Students may also choose to room with a fellow CET student. | |
| Co-Curricular Opportunities | Students have access full access to the academic and residential facilities provided to CNU's larger community. |
| Excursions | Several field trips to places of historic and cultural interest in Beijing are also offered. |
