Academics The American University of Rome is a private, independent American institution of higher education in Rome committed to offering liberal studies and professional courses in an international environment that promotes cross-cultural understanding. It also serves study abroad students and graduate students pursuing degrees at other univerities and persons interested in continuing their professional and liberal education.
Courses The Rome Center offers course work in Classical Studies, Fine Arts and Art History, History, and Philosophy among other areas. Participants who are declared Classics majors, minors, or concentrators must select 2 units from the following course offerings: Life and Leisure of Ancient Rome (CLS207), Roman Imperial Art and Architecture (ART300), Ancient Empires (CLS306), and Latin Language if available. Also required is the intensive course taught especially for Kalamazoo students in December and ending in mid-January, “Roman Writings in Translation”. The remaining units will be selected from the general University course offerings. Students who are declared Art and/or Art History majors/minors will be required to enroll in the intensive course taught for Kalamazoo. The remaining units (5) will be selected from the general University course offerings. Cultures Credit: The following courses have been pre-approved as fulfilling the "cultures" requirement for Europe: Italian Civilization (HIST), and Art of Rome (ARTX). Please see the Study Abroad Handbook regarding instructions for petitioning for "cultures" credit for other courses.
Credits Students must enroll in the equivalent of 6 K-Units of credit for the long-term program. All course work must be completed during the fall semester. Students may not under load or overload. To receive Kalamazoo credit, courses must be within the liberal arts tradition. All students must enroll in 6 courses, which is the equivalent of 18 credit hours for American University. In order to be counted as one K-Unit of credit, a course must have 40-45 contact hours (3 semester credits). In cases where students must combine courses to achieve the minimum number of contact hours for a unit of credit, both courses must be from the same discipline, e.g. history with history or art with art. Grades from all study abroad courses will appear on the Kalamazoo transcript but are not included in the Kalamazoo grade point average. The transcript will list the title of the course, the appropriate discipline, and a translation of the local grade into the Kalamazoo "A, B, C" grading system. Students must earn the equivalent of a "C" in the local grading system to receive credit for course work completed abroad. Consult the individual Program Descriptions and the College catalogue for additional information. All course work must be completed and turned in before the end of the academic program or no credit will be given. Attendance at all classes is mandatory.
ICRP/Field Study The ICRP is not a component of this program.
