| Academics | This program offers a rigorous academic program that focuses on Judaic, Israeli, and Middle Eastern studies in fields such as political science, international relations, history, religion, literature, philosophy, and archaeology. Opportunities for independent studies and research internships are also available. | |
| Courses | The academic program begins with an intensive Hebrew language course, the Summer Ulpan (1 K-unit) conducted 8 weeks prior to the commencement of the semester. Students must enroll in a Hebrew language course and, typically, 2-3 university electives in the fall. Students interested in satisfying the language requirement in Hebrew should consult the Center for International Programs and the Language Department. Cultures Credit: The following courses have been approved as fulfilling the "cultures" requirement: Historical Geography of Jerusalem (HIST), Culture and Society in Contemporary Israel (ANSO), Foreign Policy of Israel (POLS), Israeli Literature: Myth, National Ethos, and the Individual, Issues in Contemporary Halacha (Jewish law) (RELG/HIST/PHIL). Please see the Study Abroad Handbook regarding instructions for petitioning for "cultures" credit for other courses. | |
| Credits | Students must enroll in the equivalent of 6 K-Units of credit for the Long-Term program. Students may not underload or overload. It is the student's responsibility to consult his/her academic adviser concerning course selection. To receive Kalamazoo credit, courses must be within the liberal arts tradition. In order to be counted as one K-Unit of credit, a course must have 40-45 contact hours, which is the equivalent of 3 semester hours at Hebrew University. In cases where students must combine courses to achieve the minimum number of contact hours for a unit of credit, both courses must be from the same discipline, e.g. history with history or biology with biology. Grades from all study abroad courses will appear on the Kalamazoo transcript but are not included in the Kalamazoo grade point average. The transcript will list the title of the course, the appropriate discipline, and a translation of the local grade into the Kalamazoo "A, B, C" grading system. Students must earn the equivalent of a "C" in the local grading system to receive credit for course work completed abroad. Consult the Study Abroad Handbook and the College catalogue for additional information. All course work must be completed and turned in before the end of the academic program or no credit will be given. Attendance at all classes is mandatory. | |
