Academics Kalamazoo students will take courses at Ben-Gurion based in the Overseas Student Program (OSP). The OSP offers courses in Anthropology, Archaeology, Arts, Biology, Desert Studies, Geography and Planning, Geology, Health Studies, History, Israel Studies, Judaic Studies, Literature, Middle East Studies, Philosophy, Psychology, Religion, Sociology and Women's Studies. Concentrations are offered in Conflict Resolution and Peace Studies, Environmental Studies, Anthropology and Politics of Human Resettlement, Medicine, Health Care and Social Welfare, and Hebrew Language and Literature. Students may also choose to make an internship a part of the academic program. Internships are arranged by the Ben-Gurion University Center. Note: Due to the situation in the Middle East, this program may not be available for 2006-07.
Courses The academic program begins with a six-week, intensive Hebrew language course (Summer Ulpan) prior to the beginning of the fall semester. Students are also required to take a minimum of 3 semester hours of Hebrew language instruction during the semester. The remaining courses will be taken from those offered through the Overseas Student Program at Ben-Gurion University. A catalogue of courses in the OSP is available in the Center for International Programs. Students wishing to satisfy the language requirement in Hebrew should consult with the Center for International Programs and the director of the Neglected Languages Program.Students who wish to enroll in an internship for 3 semester hours of credit during the semester should consult with the Ben-Gurion University Center for International Student Programs. See also the University's website for more information: www.bgu.ac.il/osp. It is the student's responsibility to consult her/his academic advisor concerning course selection. Cultures Credit: The following courses have been pre-approved as fulfilling the "cultures" requirement: Faith and Reason in Jewish Philosophy (PHIL/RELG), Ethnic Relations in Israel (ANTH/SOCY), Politics and Public Policy in Israel (POLS.), The Social History of Israel (HIST/SOCY). Please see the Study Abroad Handbook regarding instructions for petitioning for "cultures" credit for other courses.
Credits Students must enroll in the equivalent of 6 K-Units of credit for the Long-Term program. Students may not underload or overload. To receive Kalamazoo credit, courses must be within the liberal arts tradition. Typically, two units are earned in Hebrew language for the Summer Ulpan course taken in the beginning of the program, and the remaining 4 units depend on the courses taken. In order to be counted as one K-Unit of credit, a course must have 40-45 contact hours, which is the equivalent of 3 semester hours at Ben-Gurion University. In cases where students must combine courses to achieve the minimum number of contact hours for a unit of credit, both courses must be from the same discipline, e.g. history with history or biology with biology. Grades from all study abroad courses will appear on the Kalamazoo transcript but are not included in the Kalamazoo grade point average. The transcript will list the title of the course, the appropriate discipline, and a translation of the local grade into the Kalamazoo "A, B, C" grading system. Students must earn the equivalent of a "C" in the local grading system to receive credit for course work completed abroad. Consult the Study Abroad Handbook and the College catalogue for additional information. All course work must be completed and turned in before the end of the academic program or no credit will be given. Attendance at all classes is mandatory.
ICRP/Field Study The ICRP is not a component of this program.
Housing Students live in University dormitories with BGU students. All dormitories are equipped with kitchenettes and students prepare their own meals.
Co-Curricular Opportunities The Office of Student Activities organizes opportunities for students to pursue interests outside of the classroom. Recreation and sport facilities are available on campus. Students may also choose to participate in an optional kibbutz stay or archaeological dig for an additional fee.
