| Academics | Cognitive science is an interdiscipilinary approach to the human mind. It is generally considered a new "superscience" in the sense that it offers a common platform and a common language for numerous traditional disciplines from biology and brain sicence to computer science to linguistics and philosophy. The benifit of studying cognitive science is in the fascinating integrative world view that can be obtained and that enriches the disciplinary knowledge of the student's own fields. Successful completion of BSCS capicitatesthe students to pursue graduate studies in the cognitive sciences at a later stage of their careers. |
| Courses | BLOCK COURSES SYSTEM- BSCS is based on a block course system. A block course means a one week (i.e. 5 days), 4 hours per day, intensive course of 20 contact hours. All BSCS block courses are in the form of lectures (occasionally accompanied with independent student work). Because of the many foreign BSCS professors who only spend part of the Semester at Eotvos, the Block Course System is the only viable solution to teach full courses in the Semester. Every BSCS course is a block course except the special courses (see below). Classes of special courses are in the afternoon. Blocks may move within the block course system (to a limited extent). Block courses are not uncommon at Eotvosand are generally welcomed by students. A block course ends with an oral examination at the time of the ending of the course.STRUCTURE OF COURSES- INTRODUCTORY COURSE (1 WEEK): Orientation required, 0 (zero) credit. Personal introduction to Hungary, Budapest, the University and its facilities, the specifics of the local educational system, how BSCS works, timetables, etc. REGULAR COURSES (WEEKS 2-13) Foundations of Cognitive Science, Cognitive Ethology, Evolving Minds, Philosophy of Language, Cognitive Psychology, Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Mind, History of Philosophy, Consciousness & Free Will, Cognitive Neuroscience, Chaotic Dynamics in Mind & Brain Modeling, Complexity, Cognition, Computation. Students also complete an Individual Research (IR) Project to earn the 6th K unit. IR projects follow the guidelines of the BSCS faculty and focus on the student's major. Credit Distribution: Foundation: Introduction to Cognitive Science (required, but no additional credit) Philosophy of the Mind (PHIL 1 unit) Philosophy of Language/Science/Mind The Brain (PSYC/BIO 1 unit) The Mind & Artificial Intelligence (COMP 1 unit) Hungarian Language & Culture (LANG 1 unit) Required for Kalamazoo students IR Project (IDSY 1 Unit) Follow the guidelines of the BSCS faculty Cultures Credit: No courses pre-approved to meet the cultures requirement |
| Credits | Students must enroll in the equivalent of 6 K-Units of credit for the long-term program. Students may not underload or overload. Mathematics courses will carry Mathematics credit. Non-mathematics courses will carry credit as indicated: LANG: Hungarian Language; HIST: European History; and SOCIAL SCIENCE: European Arts and Culture. In order to be counted as one K-Unit of credit, a course must have 40-45 contact hours. It is the student's responsibility to consult his/her academic advisor concerning course selection. To receive Kalamazoo credit, courses must be within the liberal arts tradition. In cases where students must combine courses to achieve the minimum number of contact hours for a unit of credit, both courses must be from the same discipline, e.g. history with history or math with math. All course work must be completed and turned in before the end of the academic program or no credit will be given. Grades from all study abroad courses will appear on the Kalamazoo transcript but are not included in the Kalamazoo grade point average. The transcript will list the title of the course, the appropriate discipline, and a translation of the local grade into the Kalamazoo "A, B, C" grading system. Students must earn the equivalent of a "C" in the local grading system to receive credit for course work completed abroad. Consult the Study Abroad Handbook and the College catalogue for additional information. Attendance at all classes is mandatory. |
| ICRP/Field Study | The Integrative Cultural Research Project is not a component of this program |
