| Academics | College Year in Athens is non-profit educational institution and offers the study abroad program in collaboration with the International Center for Hellenic and Mediterranean Studies. The language of instruction is English and courses cover ancient times to the present. The following disciplines are represented in the course offerings: Archaeology, Art History, Classical Languages, Ethnography, History, International Relations, Modern Greek Language, Philosophy, Political Science, and Religion. Participants in this program take courses with other North American students. |
| Courses | Academic advising and orientation takes place shortly after students arrive. Students in the Long-Term program must enroll in the Archaeology of Athens course (2 K-units) and the equivalent of 4 additional K-units. A 2006/07catalogue with course descriptions is available in the CIP.Cultures Credit: The following courses have been pre-approved as fulfilling the "cultures" requirement: Archaeology of Athens (CLAS), Ancient Greek Art and Archaeology (ARTX/CLAS), Greek Philosophy: The Good Life and the Common Good (PHIL), and The Emergence and Development of Athenian Democracy from the Ancient Sources (HIST/POLS). Please see the Study Abroad Handbook regarding instructions for petitioning for "cultures" credit for other courses. |
| Credits | Students must enroll in the equivalent of 6 K-Units of credit for the Long-Term program. Students may not underload or overload. It is the student's responsibility to consult with his/her academic advisor concerning course selection. To receive Kalamazoo credit, courses must be within the liberal arts tradition. In order to be counted as one K-Unit of credit, a course must have 40-45 contact hours. In cases where students must combine courses to achieve the minimum number of contact hours for a unit of credit, both courses must be from the same discipline, e.g. history with history or art with art. Grades from all study abroad courses will appear on the Kalamazoo transcript but are not included in the Kalamazoo grade point average. The transcript will list the title of the course, the appropriate discipline, and a translation of the local grade into the Kalamazoo "A, B, C" grading system. Students must earn the equivalent of a "C" in the local grading system to receive credit for course work completed abroad. Consult the Study Abroad Handbook and the College catalogue for additional information. All course work must be completed and turned in before the end of the academic program or no credit will be given. Attendance at all classes is mandatory. |
| ICRP/Field Study | The ICRP is not a component of this program. |
| Housing | Students live in small groups in apartments - leased, furnished, equipped, and staffed by CYA - or in hotel units. Each has simple cooking facilities. During holidays, housing is available for a minimal fee. | |
| Co-Curricular Opportunities | CYA organizes a variety of extracurricular activities that have included productions of ancient Greek dramas, lectures, dance instruction, organized sports, and cooking classes. Students also have the opportunity to intern or volunteer with many of the institutes, centers, libraries, or businesses located in Athens. |
