| Academics | The program at the University of Erlangen is designed for students with sufficient proficiency in German to allow them to enroll in regular university courses. The program is especially suited to students interested in Literature, Business and Economics, History, Mathematics, Psychology, Religion, Chemistry and Art History. Music study and ensembles (vocal and instrumental) are also available. University course work will be evaluated based upon one course examination at the conclusion of the semester. |
| Courses | The program begins with a six-week intensive German language and culture course. During the University semester, students enroll in courses in the institute for foreign students and in some university courses where they are assisted by tutors. For the long-term program, 1 unit of German language credit is given for the intensive language and culture course and 1 unit is earned for the ICRP. In addition, students are required to enroll in a German Language/Literature course during the semester, either at DaF or the University. Kalamazoo students will also be required to enroll in at least one Pro-Seminar course at the University, in their discipline of choice, and also to complete a course in either German History or Landeskunde. The remaining units are earned for course work done at the University. Students may either enroll in one language course OR one Art course for credit. For the extended-term program, students follow the long-term program and then continue at the university, taking 3 units of credit selected at the University during the second semester. Students may enroll in courses at the University or select a maximum of two courses from the Deutsche als Fremdsprachen (DaF). All DaF courses must be taken for credit. All students complete an integrative cultural research project (ICRP). Catalogs and course lists from previous years are available in the Center for International Programs. Cultures Credit: The following courses have been pre-approved as fulfilling the "cultures" requirement for Europe: Brecht's Poetry (GERM), Literature and Film (GERM), and German Civilization: Germany to 1945 (SOC SCI). Please see the Study Abroad Handbook regarding instructions for petitioning for "cultures" credit for other courses. |
| Credits | For the extended-term program, students must enroll in the equivalent of 9 K-units. Students may not under load or overload. To receive Kalamazoo credit, courses must be within the liberal arts tradition. In order to be counted as one K-Unit of credit, a course must have 40-45 contact hours. In cases where students must combine courses to achieve the minimum number of contact hours for a unit of credit, both courses must be from the same discipline, e.g. history with history or biology with biology. Grades from all study abroad courses will appear on the Kalamazoo transcript but are not included in the Kalamazoo grade point average. The transcript will list the title of the course, the appropriate discipline, and a translation of the local grade into the Kalamazoo "A, B, C" grading system. Students must earn the equivalent of a "C" in the local grading system to receive credit for course work completed abroad. Consult the individual Program Descriptions and the College catalogue for additional information. All course work, including the integrative cultural research project, must be completed and turned in before the end of the academic program or no credit will be given. Attendance at all classes is mandatory. |
| ICRP/Field Study | The Integrative Cultural Research Project can be either a research project or an unpaid internship that explores global issues and the local circumstances, approaches and solutions while enhancing students' local language skills. Internship placements are typically with international agencies, women's groups, small business, or Non-Governmental Organizations. The program staff assists students with project design, internship placement or both. All ICRPs are conducted in the Erlangen area. The research or internship will result in a major paper (10-15 pages.) in German. The paper is due and must be turned in to the Resident Director before the end of the academic program or no credit will be awarded. |
| Housing | Students live and eat in German student dormitories selected by the University's international office and resident director. These dormitories are located in various parts of the city and students should be prepared to take public transportation to the university. | |
| Co-Curricular Opportunities | Students are eligible to participate in University activities and are encouraged to join one of the many clubs and organizations in the city. |
| Excursions | The Akademsches Auslandsamt organizes some excursions for participants which are available to them at additional cost. |
