Academics The program at the University of Bonn is designed for students at the intermediate level of German who wish to continue their study of German language and culture in a university setting. Students take courses especially organized for international students.
Courses The program begins with a four-week intensive German language course. During the University semester, students enroll in courses at the University's International Center. All students are required to enroll in a German language course during the semester and additional courses offered through the International Center. Students who test into the higher language levels are typically permitted to enroll in some university lecture courses which are supplemented by required tutorials, organized especially for foreign students. Most typically, students receive 3 units of German language (1 for the intensive language course and 2 for the semester language course) and 1 unit for the ICRP. The remaining 2 units are earned for course work done through the University's International Center. Catalogs and course lists from previous years are available in the Center for International Programs. All students will complete an integrative cultural research project (ICRP) as part of the academic program. Cultures Credit: The following courses have been approved as fulfilling the "cultures" requirement: German History 1871-1945 (HIST), and Germany and Europe 1871-1945 (HIST), Modern German Literature (LIT), and German Civilization and Culture - Landeskunde (SOC SCI). Please see the Study Abroad Handbook regarding instructions for petitioning for "cultures" credit for other courses.
Credits Students must enroll in the equivalent of 6 K-Units of credit for the long-term program. Students may not under load or overload. To receive Kalamazoo credit, courses must be within the liberal arts tradition. In order to be counted as one K-unit of credit, a course must have 40-45 contact hours. In cases where students must combine courses to achieve the minimum number of contact hours for a unit of credit, both courses must be from the same discipline, e.g. history with history or art with art. Grades from all study abroad courses will appear on the Kalamazoo transcript but are not included in the Kalamazoo grade point average. The transcript will list the title of the course, the appropriate discipline, and a translation of the local grade into the Kalamazoo "A, B, C" grading system. Students must earn the equivalent of a "C" in the local grading system to receive credit for course work completed abroad. Consult the individual Program Descriptions and the College catalogue for additional information. All course work, including the integrative cultural research project, must be completed and turned in before the end of the academic program or no credit will be given. Attendance at all classes is mandatory.
ICRP/Field Study The Integrative Cultural Research Project can be either a research project or an unpaid internship that explores global issues and the local circumstances, approaches and solutions while enhancing students' local language skills. Internship placements are typically with international agencies, women's groups, small business, or Non-Governmental Organizations. The program staff assists students with project design, internship placement or both. All ICRPs are conducted in the Bonn area. The research or internship will result in a major paper (10-15 pages.). The paper is due and must be turned in to the Resident Director before the end of the academic program or no credit will be awarded.
Housing Students live and eat in German student dormitories selected by the Housing Office affiliated with the University of Bonn. These dormitories are located in various parts of the city and students should be prepared to take public transportation to the university.
Co-Curricular Opportunities Students are eligible to participate in University activities and are encouraged to join one of the many clubs and organizations in the city.
Excursions The Akademisches Auslandsamt organizes some excursions for participants.
