Academics The program in Strasbourg is designed for students at the intermediate level of French who wish to have the experience of studying French language and culture in a university setting taking classes organized for international students. The program has a special emphasis on European Studies. The Council of Europe and the European Parliament are located in Strasbourg. Students will be introduced to an overview of political science, social and economic institutions and structures of the European Union.
Courses The program begins with an orientation consisting of a 2-week intensive course in French (Stage) at the IIEF and a course in French culture for 20 hours. At the conclusion of orientation, students complete a language test and according to the results, enroll in courses for foreign students at the IIEF at the discretion of the Resident Director. Students may also audit pre-selected regular university or other IIEF courses if their language level permits. All students will complete an Integrative Cultural Research Project as part of the academic program. Typically, students receive 3 units of French language (1 for the Stage French course, and 2 for the Semester French course); 1 unit of “ICRP” for the Integrative Cultural Research Project; 1 unit in social science for a combination of the French Culture course during the Stage course plus 2 courses during the semester; and the final credit is a course on Europe for a Political Science credit. Cultures credit: The following course has been approved as fulfilling the “cultures requirement: French Civilization and Culture (SOC SCI Cultures- Western Europe). Please see the Study Abroad Handbook regarding instructions for petitioning for “cultures” credit for other courses.
Credits Students must enroll in the equivalent of 6 K-Units of credit for the long-term program. Students may not underload or overload. To receive Kalamazoo credit, courses must be within the liberal arts tradition. Grades from all study abroad courses will appear on the Kalamazoo transcript but are not included in the Kalamazoo grade point average. The transcript will list the title of the course, the appropriate discipline, and a translation of the local grade into the Kalamazoo "A, B, C" grading system. Students must earn the equivalent of a "C" in the local grading system to receive credit for course work completed abroad. Consult the Study Abroad Handbook and the College catalogue for additional information. All course work must be completed and turned in before the end of the academic program or no credit will be given. Attendance is mandatory at all classes.
ICRP/Field Study The Integrative Cultural Research Project can be either a research project or an unpaid internship that explores global issues and the local circumstances, approaches and solutions while enhancing students' local language skills. The program staff assists students with project design, internship placement or both. All ICRPs are conducted in the Strasbourg area. The research or internship will result in a major paper (10-15 pages). The paper is due and must be turned in to the instructor or Resident Directors before the end of the academic program or no credit will be awarded.
Housing Most students live in home stays where they eat breakfast and suppers. The home stays are selected by Kalamazoo College's Resident Director.
Co-Curricular Opportunities Students are encouraged to participate in the many clubs and organizations in the city.
