| Academics | The program at the SUP de CO in Clermont-Ferrand is designed for students with advanced skills in French who want a university integrated study abroad experience at one of France's leading business universities. The program is appropriate for all majors, but is especially recommended for students in Economics and Business Administration and International Commerce. The program begins with a three to four week intensive French course at École Supérieure de Commerce in Clermont-Ferrand. Included in the intensive course is a two-week introductory seminar for first-year students at the SUP de CO. French language instruction will continue throughout the semester. |
| Courses | Students must enroll in the equivalent of 6 K-units of credit for the Long-Term program and 9 K-units for the Extended-Term program. Students may not underload or overload. Students will complete 5 units of credit at the SUP de CO, including one unit of French (combining the intensive French course a semester French course), the "PEPINIERE" which will count as one Social Science unit, a European Civilization course (socsci) and a French Culture course (socsci/cultural), and one SUP de CO course chosen from the following: Marketing (students taking this course should read part 1 of Kotler's Marketing Management); Human Resources Management; Introduction to Economics (previous work recommended); Introduction to Accounting (previous work recommended); or French Business Law (previous work recommended). For the final unit of credit students will complete an Integrative Cultural Research Project (ICRP). The extended-term option is designed primarily for Economics/Business students, who will continue the PEPINIERE and Marketing courses (and will earn 2 K-units per course) and choose one additional course at the SUP de CO in the second semester. French majors have the option of enrolling in a French Literature course at the local university and Fine Arts and Music students may be able to enroll in one course at Beaux Arts or Conservatoire as a substitute for the marketing course at SUP de CO at the discretion of the Resident Director in lieu of the optional course.Cultures Credit: The following courses have been approved as fulfilling the “cultures” requirement: French Culture (SOC SCI Cultures-Europe). Please see the Study Abroad Handbook regarding instructions for petitioning for “cultures” credit for other courses. |
| Credits | For the Extended-Term program, students must enroll in the equivalent of 9 K-units. Students may not underload or overload. Students may have to combine two courses in the same subject to earn one K-Unit. To receive Kalamazoo credit, courses must be within the liberal arts tradition. In order to be counted as one K-Unit of credit, a course must have 40-45 contact hours. In cases where students must combine courses to achieve the minimum number of contact hours for a unit of credit, both courses must be from the same discipline, e.g. history with history or economics with economics. Grades from all study abroad courses will appear on the Kalamazoo transcript but are not included in the Kalamazoo grade point average. The transcript will list the title of the course, the appropriate discipline, and a translation of the local grade into the Kalamazoo "A, B, C" grading system. Students must earn the equivalent of a "C" in the local grading system to receive credit for course work completed abroad. Consult the Study Abroad Handbook and the College catalogue for additional information. Credit is given for a grade of "C" or better; 10 on the 20 point French scale. All course work, including the Integrative Cultural Research Project must be completed and turned in before the end of the academic program or no credit will be given. Attendance at all classes is mandatory. |
| ICRP/Field Study | The Integrative Cultural Research Project can be either a research project or an unpaid internship that explores global issues and the local circumstances, approaches and solutions while enhancing students' local language skills. Internship placements are typically with relief organizations, international agencies, women's groups, small businesses or Non-Governmental Organizations. The program staff assists students with project design, internship placement or both. All ICRPs are conducted in the Clermont area. The research or internship will result in a major paper (10-15 pages). The paper is due and must be turned in to the instructor before the end of the academic program or no credit will be awarded. Students may earn only one K-unit for the ICRP. |
| Housing | Students are housed in homesteads selected by Kalamazoo College's Resident Director. Breakfast and evening meals are provided by the home stays; students will be given a stipend for lunches. | |
| Co-Curricular Opportunities | Students are eligible to participate in all SUP de CO sponsored activities and are encouraged to join one of the many local clubs and organizations. |
