| Academics | Lancaster University is one of the leading teaching and research institutions in the UK. Courses in the arts and humanities, pure and applied sciences, social sciences and business studies are open to international students with the appropriate backgrounds. Students majoring in English, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Computer Science, British Studies or Women's Studies will find these programs at Lancaster particularly strong. |
| Courses | Students take part in a comprehensive orientation prior to registration and the commencement of classes. Academic advisors assist students with course selection and registration. Long-Term participants typically enroll in 3 courses during the Michaelmas and Lent terms. Students may select courses from a wide range of disciplines. However, courses that are not within the liberal arts tradition are not eligible for transfer of academic credit. It is the student's responsibility to consult with his/her academic advisor at Kalamazoo College concerning course selection. Cultures Credit: The following courses have been pre-approved as fulfilling the "cultures" requirement: Art After Modernism (ARTX), Literature 1890-1945 (LIT), Modern British Politics (POLS), and Women in Society (SOCY). Please see the Study Abroad Handbook regarding instructions for petitioning for "cultures" credit for other courses. |
| Credits | Students must enroll in the equivalent of 6 K-Units of credit for the Long-Term program. Students may not underload or overload. Academic advisors at the University will help students with course selection. To receive Kalamazoo credit, courses must be within the liberal arts tradition. A list of courses at the University of Lancaster is available in the Center for International Programs. In order to be counted as one K-Unit of credit, a course must have 40-45 contact hours. In cases where students must combine courses to achieve the minimum number of contact hours for a K-Unit of credit, both courses must be from the same discipline, e.g. history with history or art with art. Grades from all study abroad courses will appear on the Kalamazoo transcript but are not included in the Kalamazoo grade point average. The transcript will list the title of the course, the appropriate discipline, and a translation of the local grade into the Kalamazoo "A, B, C" grading system. Students must earn the equivalent of a "C" in the local grading system to receive credit for course work completed abroad. Consult the Study Abroad Handbook and the College catalogue for additional information. All course work must be completed and turned in before the end of the academic program or no credit will be given. Attendance at all classes is mandatory. |
| ICRP/Field Study | The ICRP is not a component of this program. |
| Housing | Housing is in the University's residence system of "colleges." Most students are housed in single rooms grouped around communal lounge and kitchen areas. Meals can be cooked in the kitchen or eaten in the Campus dining halls. A supermarket and a bakery are located on the campus. During holiday breaks, students may remain in their university rooms for a minimal fee. | |
| Co-Curricular Opportunities | At the University of Lancaster, all students and faculty belong to a college. In addition to being the residence hall of the students, the "colleges" are also the main focus of student recreational and social life. Each college has its own undergraduate meeting and reading rooms and many have snack bars, game rooms, and other facilities. Students are eligible to participate in all University and College-sponsored activities and are encouraged to join one of the more than 80 clubs and organizations at the University or in the city. |
