Academics Goldsmiths College belongs to the University of London system of colleges and universities. The academic program concentrates on the creative, cultural, and social process and is particularly focused on contemporary culture. The Goldsmiths programs are in the fields of dramatic and visual arts, music, and social science. Therefore, this program is best suited for students in the visual and performing arts and the social sciences.
Courses The academic program begins with a required orientation. An academic tutor assists students with course registration during the orientation. Courses at Goldsmiths may meet for one, two or three terms. The course schedule is organized by course level so that it is difficult to enroll in courses of various levels. Typically, students enroll in three courses each term. Theater students are required to enroll in the "London Theater" course, which focuses on National, West End, local and "fringe" theaters. It is the student's responsibility to consult his/her academic advisor concerning course selection. The departments at Goldsmiths are Anthropology, Art, Art History, Communication Studies, Computing, Design, Drama and Theater Arts, Economics, Education, English and Comparative Literature, History, Languages, Music, Psychology, Social Policy, Politics, Sociology, and Professional and Community Education. Cultures Credit: The following courses have been pre-approved as fulfilling the "cultures" requirement: Art in Contemporary Society: Presentation and Education Policy (ARTX), Studies in Literature and Politics (LIT/POLS), Shakespeare's London (LIT), The Making of Modern European Thought (HIST/PHIL), and The Future of Britain (HIST). Please see the Study Abroad Handbook regarding instructions for petitioning for "cultures" credit for other courses.
Credits Students in the Long-Term program must enroll in the equivalent of 6 K-units of credit. Most typically, students will take three Goldsmiths courses per term. Students may not underload or overload. No partial credit will be rewarded. To receive Kalamazoo credit, courses must be within the liberal arts tradition. In order to be counted as a Kalamazoo unit, a course must have a minimum of 40-45 contact hours of instruction. Most typically, four Goldsmiths credits are equivalent to one Kalamazoo unit. In cases where students must combine courses to achieve the minimum number of contact hours for a Kalamazoo unit of credit, both courses must be from the same discipline-i.e. art history with art history. Grades from all study abroad courses will appear on the Kalamazoo transcript but are not included in the Kalamazoo grade point average. The transcript will list the title of the course, the appropriate discipline, and a translation of the local grade into the Kalamazoo "A, B, C" grading system. Students must earn the equivalent of a "C" in the local grading system to receive credit for course work completed abroad. Consult the Study Abroad Handbook and the College catalogue for additional information. Attendance at all classes is mandatory.
ICRP/Field Study The ICRP is not a component of this program.
Housing Students live in college housing located either on campus or within a short walk from the college. Housing units have kitchenettes. Students can prepare their own meals or eat in one of the College cafeterias, and can make arrangements to remain in their rooms during holidays and breaks.
Co-Curricular Opportunities Students have access to all Goldsmith College facilities including a gym and tennis courts. There are many clubs and student organizations. All students will be enrolled in the Goldsmiths student union. See the "Study in London" brochure for more details.
