| Academics | The American University in Cairo offers a comprehensive liberal arts education. The International Student Services Office coordinates the study abroad program. All instruction is in English, with the exception of some advanced Arabic literature and language courses. Courses that focus on Arabic language and literature, Islamic art and architecture, Egyptology and Middle East history are the most popular. Students majoring in Anthropology, History, International and Area Studies, Political Science and Religion are best suited for this program. |
| Courses | All students are enrolled in the 20-hour, Survival Arabic course offered before the semester begins. When combined with Arabic language courses during regular terms, Survival Arabic can yield academic credit. The academic advising period begins shortly after the Survival Arabic course commences. The on-site orientation is next, followed by class registration. Study abroad students have access to all University courses and are fully integrated with Egyptian students. Cultures Credit: The following courses have been pre-approved as fulfilling the "cultures" requirement: Arab Society (ANSO), Peoples and Culture of the Middle East and North Africa (ANSO), Art and Architecture of the City of Cairo (ARTX), Muslim Political Thought (POLS), and Selected Themes and Topics in Arabic Literature in Translation (LIT). Please see the Study Abroad Handbook regarding instructions for petitioning for "cultures" credit for other courses. |
| Credits | Students must enroll in the equivalent of 6 K-Units of credit for the Long-Term program. Students may not underload or overload. To receive Kalamazoo credit, courses must be within the liberal arts tradition. It is the student's responsibility to consult with their academic advisor concerning course selection. In order to be counted as one K-Unit of credit, a course must have 40-45 contact hours or at least 3 semester hours. No partial credit will be rewarded. In cases where students must combine courses to achieve the minimum number of contact or semester hours for a unit of credit, both courses must be from the same discipline, e.g. history with history or biology with biology. Grades from all study abroad courses will appear on the Kalamazoo transcript but are not included in the Kalamazoo grade point average. The transcript will list the title of the course, the appropriate discipline, and a translation of the local grade into the Kalamazoo "A, B, C" grading system. Students must earn the equivalent of a "C" in the local grading system to receive credit for course work completed abroad. Consult the Study Abroad Handbook and the College catalogue for additional information. All course work must be completed and turned in before the end of the academic program or no credit will be given. Attendance at all classes is mandatory. |
| ICRP/Field Study | The ICRP is not a component of this program. |
| Housing | Study abroad students are housed in the University's dormitory in double rooms. Meals are available in the campus cafeteria or in local restaurants. | |
| Co-Curricular Opportunities | AUC offers a wide variety of student activities, sports, clubs, associations and groups. Study abroad students are encouraged to participate in all that interests them. Student government, Volunteers in Action, the Egyptian Folk Dance Troupe, Model Arab League, and the student newspaper, Caravan, are just a few examples of available opportunities. |
