Academics The program at Curtin University of Technology is especially suited to students in the Health Sciences, Biology, Economics and Business, and Computer Science. In addition to strong offerings in the Natural Sciences and Business, Curtin University also offers courses in the Social Sciences and Humanities. Language instruction is available in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, and Indonesian.
Courses Most courses offered at Curtin University of Technology are open to Kalamazoo students provided the students have taken the required prerequisites and the courses are within Kalamazoo College's liberal arts tradition. Students will not receive credit for course work that is applied or skill development in content. All students will be required to enroll in an Aboriginal Studies course, a service learning course and an ICRP. Students will complete a preliminary selection of courses prior to leaving Kalamazoo and register when they arrive at the University. Students on the Long-Term program will enroll in the equivalent of 4 Kalamazoo units during the semester (3 Curtin courses in addition to the required Aboriginal Studies course). All students are required to complete an Integrative Cultural Research Project/Field Study in November and December or participate in Asia Study Tour (AST). Please see the section under ICRP for additional information. Cultures Credit: The following courses have been approved as fulfilling the "cultures" requirement: Introduction to Indigenous Australians (Cultures: Australia), Australian Studies (Cultures: Australia). Please see the Study Abroad Handbook regarding instructions fro petitioning for "cultures" credit for other courses.
Credits Students must enroll in the equivalent of 6 K-Units of credit for the long-term program. Students may not underload or overload, but enroll in 6 units for successful completion of regular courses offered at Curtin University (the discipline of the unit depends on the nature of the courses taken). To receive Kalamazoo credit, courses must be within the liberal arts tradition. In order to be counted as one K-Unit of credit, a course must have 40-45 contact hours (20-25 Curtin University credit points). In cases where students must combine courses to achieve the minimum number of contact hours for a unit of credit, both courses must be from the same discipline, e.g. history with history or biology with biology. Grades from all study abroad courses will appear on the Kalamazoo transcript but are not included in the Kalamazoo grade point average. The transcript will list the title of the course, the appropriate discipline, and a translation of the local grade into the Kalamazoo "A, B, C" grading system. Students must earn the equivalent of a "C" in the local grading system to receive credit for course work completed abroad. All course work, including the Integrative Cultural Research Project (where applicable), must be completed and turned in before the end of the academic program or no credit will be given. Attendance is required at all classes.
ICRP/Field Study All students will be required to complete an Integrative Cultural Research Project (ICRP). Typically these will be done during November and the first two weeks of December. Students will be required to devote a minimum of five weeks full time to the project and one week full time to the write-up. Students wishing to devote more time to the project, should discuss this with the director of the CIP and Dr. Helen Fairnie. All ICRP's must be completed in the greater Perth area. Students may also elect to participate in the Asia Study Tour organized by Curtin in lieu of completing an ICRP. Note:participation in the study tour will cost approximately an additional $2,500. Dr. Ian Fairnie will serve as the project coordinator and evaluator.
Housing Students live in on-campus University housing arranged by the University housing office. In most of the housing options, there are 4-6 study bedrooms with a shared bath, kitchen, and living room. A Japan house is also available to students wishing to live in a language house. The residents of the University housing units tend to be rural Australians or International Students. Most of the other Australian students at Curtin tend to live either at home with their parents or in apartments in the city or suburbs.
Co-Curricular Opportunities Students have access to all university facilities. The Students' Guild sponsors a number of student organizations. The University and affiliated student organizations also sponsor several programs of sports, activities and entertainment. Health Sciences is developing an "Aussie Buddy Program" that will link international students with an Australian host. Volunteer opportunities are available through the Curtin Volunteers office and may also be available in the Center for Aboriginal Studies. There are easy public transportation connections from the Bentley campus to Perth and the surrounding suburbs. With the Indian Ocean only minutes away, many water sports are available.
Excursions The program begins with an excursion to the Bush during the orientation. The International Office, Curtin Volunteers and other campus offices occasionally organize outings for students, which are available at a modest fee. Some courses have field trips. Early in the program, all students will visit a remote Aboriginal community east of Perth for a weekend. Many students find here opportunities for their ICRP. The University has a student travel office on campus which offers student discounts on domestic and international travel.
