Effectively Presenting Yourself: the Cover Letter

An cover letter is uniquely individual for every writer, and should reflect differences for each position for which you are applying. The cover letter could be the most powerful tool in presenting yourself to the externship sponsor. Your goal is to reflect your character, motivations and accomplishments. The following bulleted points can serve as a guide, even though no true "template" exists for letter writing.

  • In your first sentence, state exactly why you are writing.
  • Include reasons why this particular externship opportunity appeals to you.
  • Describe what you hope to learn from the alumnus during the experience including how you think this externship experience will improve your personal and professional skills.
  • Provide some basic information about yourself (class year, major, hometown) and highlight some of your past experiences.
  • Include a statement that you hope you can also provide some work of value to the employer/organization
  • Explain how you hope the externship will assist you in your career exploration process.
  • Thank the sponsor for her/his time committed to considering you for the externship.

The Center for Career Development has a staff of Career Advisors who can assist you in critiquing and building upon the first draft of your cover letter.
