Financial Considerations:
The Good News…
• Under the CCD’s original 6-year financial strategy
for the program, the CCD is currently planning to partner with
externs in funding half of the cost for long-distance travel,
if needed, outside a 100-mile radius of campus or the student’s
home, for Summer 2008 Discovery Externships. Costs will vary depending
on location, transportation fees, etc. The remaining balance will
be billed to your student account. If the extern receives a round-trip
transportation ticket (air, train, etc.) and needs to change or
terminate the agreed upon dates of the externship after the purchase
of the ticket, the extern will be responsible for the total cost
of the ticket as well as any monetary charges associated with
its termination. The extern will be responsible for communicating
any of these changes directly to the Travel Agent and the CCD.
The Center will not cover the cost of transportation within a
100-mile radius of campus or the student’s home. The center
will provide partial support for driving expenses (outside the
100-mile limit), but not overnight accommodations.
• The Center plans to assist students with identifying the
safest, most affordable housing arrangements possible for the duration
of the Discovery Externship (e.g. alumni homestay, hostel, university
housing) and plans to fund half of the housing costs where alumni
homestays are not available, up to a maximum of two weeks. The remaining
balance for housing costs where an alumni homestay is not available
will be billed to your student account. The alumni homestay is a
generous contribution from “K” alums, providing an extern
with free or minimal cost housing. If an alumni homestay is identified
near the externship site, this option will be pursued first in coordinating
the schedule of the externship. If the homestay is not available
and the extern secures housing other than what is supported by the
Center, the extern will be responsible for the costs associated
with that living arrangement.
• The Center will also provide a modest grant to help cover
a small portion of actual expenses (meals, bus fare, parking,
etc.) incurred during the externship, up to a maximum of 4 weeks
in length. This does not include personal items such as clothing
and toiletries. The student will be responsible for all other
excess costs incurred on the externship experience. If you are
selected to participate in a Discovery Externship, your check
will be available at the Center. If you are not on campus during
the Spring 2008 quarter, your check will be mailed to the home
address listed on your application. All receipts and any unused
funds from this grant will be submitted to the CCD for future
budgetary projects and record keeping purposes.
The Bad News…
• If the extern participant withdraws from the program, the
student will be charged a withdrawal fee of $250. If the extern
participant withdraws after the transportation ticket has been purchased,
the student will be charged the $250 withdrawal fee and the cost
of the ticket. Additionally, if the grant has been issued in the
case of a withdrawal, the extern will be required to return the
funds to the College within 3 business days from the withdrawal
date to avoid being billed that amount plus a $50 administrative
fee.
• Failure to hand in the requested program items outlined
in the “Participant Responsibilities” section, page
180, of the Discovery Externship Catalogue will result in the extern
reimbursing the CCD up to all costs associated
with the Discovery Externship experience.
• As participation in the program is a serious commitment
and because important long-term relationships are at stake, students
will be charged these fees accordingly. (It is your
responsibility to communicate all financial obligations with whoever
is responsible for paying your student account.) In the unfortunate
event of illness, injury or other extenuating circumstances, the
Center reserves the right to waive the above policies.
A Note on International Externships...
Due to constraints of time, distance and cost, international externships
will likely represent a small proportion of our catalogue listings. Regarding
the higher cost of international opportunities, students will need to
consider the following limitations on funding support:
• The Discovery Externship budget will match the student’s
contribution for travel (up to $500) and provide the usual grant to help
subsidize day-to-day expenses.
• Students may seek a grant of up to $600 through the Center for
International Programs under the Project Grants offering through Beeler
Fund. Inquire with the CIP for the details of the grant application process
and deadline.
So, for example, if a student’s round-trip flight to Bombay, India
for a two-week externship costs $1800, the student:
• May apply for/receive a grant from CIP (Beeler) for $600*.
• Will receive $500 through the Discovery Externship Program budget.
• Will need to personally contribute $700 towards the cost of travel.
• Will receive $100 through the Discovery Externship Program budget
to apply towards actual expenses in the externship.
*If the Beeler grant is not awarded, the student will need to cover the
additional share of the cost for the round-trip airfare
