Department of Biology : BIOL 490 - Functioning as a Biologist

BIOL 490 course components
Students must complete each of the following components this course:
a. Attend all BIOL 490 meetings during Junior and Senior Springs, and participate in all Biology Department seminars throughout the year
b. Participate in a thesis review team - Senior Fall
c. Submit a Senior Connections Essay – Senior Winter
d. Serve as a referee for other students’ Diebold presentations - Jr. & Sr. Springs
e. Attend the entire Diebold Symposium - Senior Spring
f. Give an oral or poster presentation of a SIP - Senior Spring
g. Complete the Biology Dept. Skills Survey and Senior Questionnaire – Senior Spring

When to register for BIOL 490
Students may register for BIOL 490 as a unit of credit at any time during the senior year. Biology majors are expected to attend and participate in all departmental seminars during all quarters in which they are on campus.

Is BIOL 490 a graded course?
Yes. The final grade for the course is not submitted until Spring Quarter of senior year, regardless of the quarter in which the student is formally registered for the course. The grade for BIOL 490 is based on all components of the course outlined above.

Junior Spring - 2007
Entire quarter Regular meetings of Biol 490 (MWF @ 2:40-3:55 PM)
Friday, Week 7 Applications for Diebold and Batts Fellowships due to department chair (Dr. Langeland)
Monday, Week 9 Completed SIP contract (with SIP mentor signature and summary of proposed SIP) due to Biology faculty SIP coordinator (Dr. Sotherland)

 

Senior Fall - 2007
Fri, Week 1 SIP registration changes – complete SIP add/drop form if necessary
Fri, Week 2 Complete draft of SIP thesis due. Your SIP supervisor needs to sign the cover page, indicating that s/he has read it. Submit completed draft to Biology office.
Entire quarter Peer review groups meet to review SIP theses
TBA Practice written comprehensive exam

 

Senior Winter - 2008
Fri, Week 1 Final bound copy of SIP thesis due. Submit to Biology office.
Mon, Week 4 Senior Connections Essay due. Submit to Biology office.
Mon, Week 5

Written Comprehensive Examination

Tu/Th, Week 5 Oral Comprehensive Examination

 

Senior Spring - 2008
Entire quarter Regular meetings of Biol 490 (MWF @ 2:40-3:55 PM)
Th-Sat, Week 5* Diebold Symposium and senior SIP presentations
