Academic Resource Center : The Math Center
Philosophy of the Math Center
The Math Center staff believe that anyone can succeed in math, and we reject the myth that only certain kinds of people can think mathematically.  Keeping this basic belief in mind, the Math Center staff are careful to respect the innate intelligence of the student.  We focus on the students and their development of sound problem-solving skills rather than on the problems themselves.  Instead of functioning as TA's, the math consultants maintain the role of peer advisor by helping students to test their approaches to problems, clarify their thinking, and explain their thinking to other students.

About the Math Center
The Math Center is located in the Academic Resource Center, 205 Olds/Upton.  Student consultants are available on a walk-in basis to help you with your math.  Come in to study for exams or just to do your daily homework--if you get stuck, someone will be there to help.  Math consultants can work with you one-on-one or lead group problem-solving sessions.  Whether you're taking Precalculus, Calculus, or Linear Algebra, we can help!

What can I expect from a math consultant?
The math consultant will guide you to finding the answer for yourself by asking leading questions and comparing the problem to material you've already mastered.   The goal of a math consultation is to show you strategies for figuring out problems on your own.

Can I get help on mastery exams?
Yes.  First work through the mastery exam yourself.  If there are problems that you can't figure out or if you fail the exam, visit a math consultant.   The consultant will help you with concepts you don't understand.  After you've met with a consultant, print out another version of the mastery exam and work it on your own.  You may not turn in a version of the exam on which a consultant has helped you.

How should I prepare?
First, try the problems on your own, and get as far as you can without any help.  If you get really stuck, then come see a math consultant.  Try to articulate what it is you don't understand.   Coming to the session prepared will make the session more productive and save you time.
