Viewing of A PARTY by Jim Gilmore ’83
Room 103, Dewing Hall
In the Fall of 1982, K senior Jim Gilmore enrolled in an independent study with Professor Larry Jaquith in the Department of Theatre & Communication Arts. The result was A PARTY – an 8mm B/W silent movie that examined the various stereotypes – the jocks, the nerds, the druggies, the brainiacs, the tramps and do-gooders – found in a typical dorm party. In 1982 “keggers” were typical in the upper-class dorms of Crissey & Severn. In order to cast the film, Gilmore turned to his roommates, his friends, and fellow theatre majors. He wrote a story outline, created a storyboard and cast the characters (asking everybody to play against type). He set the story in his suite in Crissey, bought a keg one weekend night, and began filming into the early hours of the morning. In the course of the film the party drags on, the characters change and the stereotypes begin to crack. The film was spliced together in the basement of the FAB and premiered at the very end of the semester in the Recital Hall. Over 30 years later A PARTY returns to campus…
