Lifelong Learning Seminars
Various Campus Locations
Learn about a new topic or
revisit one you studied as a student! Seminars on various
topics will be led by alumni, faculty members, and staff.
Seminar topics will include a discussion of this year's
Summer Common Reading book, Edward P. Jones' The Known
World, and a lecture on Victor Lange's work on the subject
of J.W. Goethe. Other seminars will also be added to the
schedule, so check below for updates on seminar offerings
and locations.
Seminar One
"Kalamazoo College Etudes"
Led by Bernard Palchick, Retired Professor of Art
Gallery, Light Fine Arts Building
Join Bernard Palchick for
an interactive gallery tour of his latest collection of
watercolors, "Kalamazoo College Etudes." At the
beginning of his years of traveling for Kalamazoo College
as Vice President for College Advancement - attending alumni
events, and seeking support - Bernard gave himself an assignment.
The assignment was to paint a small watercolor of whatever
view was provided by his hotel room window. Soon the project
grew to include paintings as a record of all of Bernard's
travels and a zip-lock bag of studio supplies became a standard
part of his luggage. The result is a stunning collection
of études whose titles are the city and hotel room
number.
Seminar Two
"The College Admission Process: How do I prepare
my child (and myself!) for college?"
Led by Eric Staab, Dean of Admission
Dewing 204
Come meet Eric Staab, the
new Dean of Admission, and a member of his staff as they
share the intricacies of how selective liberal arts colleges
build a class. Learn some of the does and don'ts of the
application process as well as useful tips on how to find
the right fit for your son or daughter.
Seminar Three
"Celebrating the Victor Lange Collection"
Led by James van der Laan of Illinois State University
2:00 Lecture in Upjohn Library Commons Room 308
3:00 Reception in the A.M. Todd Rare Book Room
Kalamazoo College recently received a special gift from
the family of Thomas Lange 71: the personal library
of Langes late father, Victor Lange, a renowned scholar
of German literature. The collection of over 10,000 volumes
includes numerous rare first editions of German literary
works and even an original letter written by the great German
poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. In celebration of this
gift, Professor James van der Laan of Illinois State University
will deliver a lecture on the subject of J.W. Goethes
best-known work, the drama Faust, entitled Faust Across
the Ages and the Arts. Dr. van der Laans
talk will be followed at 3:00 p.m. by a reception outside
the A.M. Todd Rare Book Room on the third floor of Upjohn
Library Commons. An exhibit of first editions and other
unique items from the Victor Lange collection is on display
in the A.M. Todd Rare Book Room.
Seminar Four
"Crossing Borders: Global Citizens at Home & Abroad"
Led by a panel of students, faculty, and staff
Dewing 305
A panel of students, faculty and staff will discuss service-learning
at Kalamazoo College, and how community engagement transforms
students and communities. Featuring Kiran Cunningham '83,
Professor of Anthropology at Kalamazoo College; Alison Geist,
M.P.H., Director, and Post-Bacc. Fellow, Breigh Montgomery
'05, both of the College's endowed Mary Jane Underwood Stryker
Institute for Service-Learning, and Civic Engagement Scholars,
students who hold scholarships to lead our community programs.
Seminar Five
"The Known World"
Led by Jim VanSweden '73, Director of College Communications
Humphrey House Lounge
Join Kalamazoo College alumnus and Director of College Communications
Jim VanSweden '73 for a discussion of this year's Summer
Common Reading Book The Known World by Edward P.
Jones. Kalamazoos Summer Common Reading joins new
students, faculty, and staff in a conversation about a novel
they have read during the summer. Set in Manchester County,
Virginia, 20 years before the Civil War began, Edward P.
Jones's debut novel, The Known World, is a masterpiece
of overlapping plot lines, time shifts, and heartbreaking
details of life under slavery. Set in antebellum Virginia,
the book chronicles the fictional tale of Henry Townsend,
a free black man who owns his own slaves.
