I was recently featured in a really cool video made by my peers Umang and Jose with the song “Happy” by Pharell Williams playing. See if you can find me: Happy Kzoo (hint: 0:37 and 2:02)!
As my junior year comes to a close, I have been reflecting quite a bit on what makes spring my favourite quarter at K. I have been so busy doing work that I love and going to the most wondrous events in Kalamazoo.
In the beginning of May, I ran the annual 10K Borgess Run with some fellow cross-country runners and a couple new friends. This race is one of my favourites because the energy at large running events is simply phenomenal! The running community in Kalamazoo and the greater Midwest is so welcoming, positive and inspirational.
Two major highlights of spring quarter include Crystal Ball and DOGL (Day of Gracious Living). Crystal Ball is an opportunity for students to dress in drag and confront gender normative standards of dress and beauty. Crystal Ball is not only a celebratory gathering of students with live music, food and loads of decorations, but it is also an opportunity to educate campus on issues pertaining to LGBTQI persons.
DOGL is a day that students are randomly given off days from classes and to have a day to live graciously. It’s debatably my favourite day of the school year, and I’m sure that sentiment would be echoed by many of my peers. Students rally together and head out to North Beach in South Haven (about 45 minutes west) to hang out on the beach and enjoy each other’s company as spring quarter dwindles to a close (it is usually seventh of eighth week of spring quarter). This year it was particularly foggy, and was brilliantly coined “FOGL” because of it, but it was nonetheless a day graciously spent!
And then all the other stuff in between…
