English Language Proficiency for International Students

All international students must verify English proficiency at the time of application to Kalamazoo College. Use one or more of the methods below to document English proficiency.

1. TOEFL
  • Computer-based TOEFL exam: A recommended score of 213 or higher
  • Paper-based TOEFL exam: A recommended score of 550 or higher
  • Internet-based TOEFL exam (iBT): A recommended score of 80 or higher.

    2. SAT
    A recommended verbal score of 600 or higher for students taking the SAT I

    3. IELTS
    A recommended score of 7 or higher

    4. English speaking country
    If an applicant is originally from an English speaking country (see below) and the primary language of instruction is English.

    5. English as a second Language
    Applicants for whom English is a second language but have attended a secondary school in an English speaking country (see below) for at least two years.

    6. IB Programs
    Applicants who have completed or are pursuing a full IB diploma and are taking English A1 or English A2 and have a predicted grade of 5 or higher.
