Congress established these scholarships in 1975 to honor President Truman. Up to 85 awards are made each year to students in their junior year who plan to attend graduate school in preparation for careers in government, education, or other forms of public service. At least one Truman Scholarship is awarded to each of the 50 states. Am I a potential Truman Scholar? Click here to evaluate your potential. Priority is given to candidates who propose to enroll in graduate and professional programs, specifically oriented to careers in public service. These include law and master's and PhD programs in public administration, public policy analysis, public health, international relations, government, economics, social services delivery, education and human resource development, and conservation and environmental protection. Successful applicants are invited to interviews during the spring, at first the state and then the national level. (Our graduate scholarship committee aids in preparation for these interviews.) Awards currently are $30,000, $3,000 of which is to be used during the senior undergraduate year and $27,000 for graduate school ($13,500 per year for a two-year program and $9,000 per year for a three-year program). Awardees of the Truman Scholarship attend a "leadership week" in May, an awards ceremony in Independence, Missouri in June and are eligible for a ten-week summer institute in Washington, D.C. Campus Deadline: January 15, 2007. For more information please see Diane Kiino, Dow 114. Web site: http://www.truman.gov |
