The prestigious Rhodes Scholarship is awarded annually to 32 highly qualified college seniors distributed across eight districts of the United States. The fellowship supports the scholar (tuition, fees, etc.) plus a living allowance to study at Oxford University, Oxford, England for a 2 (or possibly 3) year period. 

Selection criteria: 

• literary and scholastic attainments;
• energy to use one’s talents to the full, as exemplified by fondness for and success in sports
• truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship
• moral force of character and instincts to lead, and to take an interest in one’s fellow beings.

Eligibility:

Applicants must apply in one of 50 states and must be a citizen of the U.S.

• Applicants must be 18-24 years of age
• Applicants must have achieved academic standing sufficient to complete a bachelors degree before October 1 of the year of going into residence at Oxford.

Applications: 

• Available in July, these may be downloaded from the Rhodes web site.
• Submit a copy of your completed application and transcripts by Sept. 19 to Dr. Kiino of the Graduate Fellowships Committee (Dow 114).
• Have one copy of all letters of appraisal sent to Dr. Kiino by Sept. 19 (this is in addition to the 10 copies they must send directly to the Rhodes selection committee by October 11).
• A campus interview is required for endorsement from the College and will be arranged by Dr. Kiino.
• Application requires at least 5 letters of appraisal, 4 must be faculty.
• These scholarships are extremely competitive and applications should be initiated well before the deadline. It will take some time to gather supporting documentation and the statement of applicant's interest must be carefully composed. (You should seek critical appraisal of your efforts.) You should study the Oxford catalogue to design your proposed area of study.
