These fellowships are awarded to college seniors and college graduates without teaching experience (Junior fellows) and to experienced secondary school teachers in grades 7-12 (Senior fellows) who will enroll in full time and part time graduate study leading to one of the following master's degrees (listed in order of preferability):
Each fellowship recipient must take at least 12 semester hours or the equivalent in topics directly related to the framing and history of the Constitution of the United States. Recipients are eligible for a maximum of up to $24,000 for up to two years full time study (part time study up to 5 years, maximum $24,000 award). Fellowship pays cost of tuition, fees, books, room and board. They DO NOT support study toward doctoral degrees or teacher certificates. All James Madison Fellows are required to attend, at the Foundation's expense, a four week graduate level Summer Institute on the founding of American constitutional government at a university in the Washington, D.C. area.
