Academics at
Nationally Prestigious Scholarships

These are scholarships and fellowships offered by national and international foundations. Most of them are exceedingly competitive and their applications require careful thought and preparation. Winning one, however, can open many doors for you in the future.

If you are interested in applying for any of these, you must submit a preliminary application to Dr. Diane Kiino, Chair of the Graduate Fellowships Committee three months in advance of the fellowship deadline.

Preliminary Application

Undergraduate Scholarships: 

Harry S. Truman Scholarships: Awarded to juniors planning to attend graduate school in preparation for careers in government, education or other forms of public service. Deadline for nominations, late January.
The Morris K. Udall Scholarship: For sophomores or juniors who have outstanding potential and who study the environment and related fields.
OR for Native American and Alaska Native sophomores or juniors who have outstanding potential and are in fields related to health care or tribal public policy. Deadline, February.

The Goldwater Scholarship: For mathematics and the sciences.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI): Summer research grants for the natural sciences or mathematics.

Graduate Scholarships and Fellowships:
British Marshall Scholarships—For study at any of a number of British universities.
The Fulbright Fellowship—One-year of study/research abroad.
The Gates Cambridge Scholarship—For one year of study at Cambridge University.
James Madison Fellowships—For students planning to teach secondary school in American history, American government or social studies.
The National Science Foundation Fellowship—Three-year graduate research fellowships in science, mathematics, engineering, and social sciences.
The Rhodes Scholarship—For study at Oxford University.
The Truman Scholarship—Available to students in their junior year who plan to attend graduate school in preparation for careers in government, education, or other forms of public service.
